Sometimes the Best Experiences Are the Ones You Don’t Expect

After a busy few months, ten days in Italy offered something that is increasingly difficult to find: the chance to stop, breathe and properly recharge.

We stayed in Lovere, a beautiful town on the northern shore of Lake Iseo. It does not attract the same international attention as Lake Garda or Lake Como—and perhaps that is part of its appeal.

There were no great crowds to negotiate and no sense that we needed to rush from one attraction to the next. Instead, there was the peaceful rhythm of life beside the lake: walking through the old town, watching the boats, enjoying long family meals, 5km morning runs and simply taking in the view.

In today’s always-connected world, genuine rest can feel like a luxury. We are constantly encouraged to be available, productive and moving on to the next thing. Yet stepping away from that noise is important. It gives us the space to regain perspective, appreciate where we are and return home with renewed energy.

Lovere gave us exactly that.

However, one of the most memorable experiences of the holiday came from somewhere very different.

During our stay, an opportunity arose to travel to Milan and watch Inter Milan play Monza at the San Siro. Tickets had become available, and we were fortunate enough to secure four seats for just €10 each.

At that price, we expected the seats to be somewhere close to the Milanese clouds. Instead, we found ourselves a bit lower down but with an excellent view of the pitch.

From the moment we approached the stadium, it felt special. The San Siro is one of football’s great venues: an iconic stadium associated with two of Europe’s most famous clubs and with the memories of Italia ’90.

When empty, it might now appear a little tired in places. But when it fills with supporters, colour and noise, it comes alive. For the opening game of the season, the atmosphere was extraordinary. The flags, chanting and sheer scale of the occasion reminded us that a stadium is much more than concrete and steel. It is the people inside it who give it life.

For the four of us to experience that atmosphere together, for €40 in total, was a wonderful surprise.

It was also a reminder that a memorable experience does not always have to be an expensive one.

We often associate luxury with price, exclusivity or a famous destination. But real luxury can take many forms. It might be the peace and serenity of a lesser-known Italian lake. It might be having enough time to sit together over dinner. It might be discovering that one of Europe’s most iconic football stadiums is unexpectedly accessible to an ordinary family.

The best experiences are often found through a combination of local knowledge, good timing and a willingness to look beyond the obvious.

That principle sits at the heart of 21st Century Butler. Whether helping someone settle into a new area, researching activities for a family, arranging a special day or simply removing some of the pressures of everyday life, the aim is not always to find the most expensive option.

It is to find the right experience for the right person.

Lake Iseo gave us the peace we needed. Milan gave us an experience we had not expected. Together, they made the holiday all the more memorable.

Sometimes, getting away from the madding crowds is exactly what we need.

And sometimes, stepping into a crowd of thousands creates a memory that will stay with us forever.
