There was a time when a well-run household relied on a team: a house manager, a PA, someone to oversee property matters, someone to organise the family’s schedule, and others to handle the day-to-day practicalities.

Today, many people are quietly moving in the opposite direction.

Not because their lives are simpler—but because they’ve become more complex.

Modern households, particularly those balancing business interests, property, family life and demanding schedules, don’t just need more people. They need the right kind of support. Someone who can move confidently between different worlds, understand priorities without constant instruction, and get things done with minimal friction.

This is where the idea of a 21st century butler comes in.

This isn’t about silver service or tradition for tradition’s sake. It’s about capability, judgement, and trust.

Before moving into this way of working, I spent several years building and running a large-scale events and hospitality business at Redhouse Farm.

Over that period, we organised and delivered more than 3,000 events—ranging from private celebrations to large, high-end functions. It became one of the leading venues of its kind, known not just for the setting, but for the way events were run.

What mattered most, though, was trust.

Clients didn’t just book a venue—they relied on me to make things happen. To solve problems quickly, to manage moving parts under pressure, and to ensure that everything came together exactly as it should. For many, I became the person they looked to throughout the process.

Stepping away from that business was not a small decision. It marked the end of an intense and rewarding chapter.

But it also made something clear.

The part of the work I valued most wasn’t the scale—it was the responsibility. Being the person people trusted to handle important things, often behind the scenes, and to do it well.

That is exactly what I’ve chosen to carry forward into 21st Century Butler.

Over the past five years, working closely for an ultra-high-net-worth individual, I’ve seen first-hand how varied and interconnected these responsibilities can be. On any given week, that might involve coordinating aspects of a commercial property portfolio, organising and overseeing work in the home, acting as a point of contact for external partners, or helping navigate decisions around schools and family life.

It’s not one role—it’s many. But more importantly, it’s about understanding how those roles connect.

For example, when a private home is used as a filming location, someone needs to sit in the middle—ensuring the production company gets what they need, while protecting the interests, time and privacy of the owner. That requires organisation, certainly, but also judgement and clear communication.

The same applies when managing tradespeople, advising on education options, or handling the countless practical details that keep a household and its wider interests running smoothly.

Traditionally, these responsibilities would be divided across multiple people. Increasingly, however, there is real value in having a single, trusted individual who can take ownership across all of them.

Just as importantly, that support doesn’t always need to be full-time.

Most people don’t require someone five or six days a week. What they need is someone experienced, reliable, and already capable—who can step in where needed, provide continuity, and quietly take responsibility for the things that would otherwise consume time and attention.

That is the model I’m building with 21st Century Butler.

Working on a fractional basis, with a small number of clients, allows me to provide a high level of personal service without dilution. It means being available, consistent, and fully invested—without being unnecessarily present.

It also means choosing to work with people who value discretion, trust, and competence over formality.

Because ultimately, this isn’t about titles.

It’s about making complex lives run more smoothly, with less effort, and with the confidence that the details are being handled properly.

That is what a 21st century butler is—and why now is exactly the right time for it.
